Lieutenant Sutch limped across the hall, where the portraits of the Fevershams rose one above the other to the ceiling, and went out on to the stone-flagged terrace at the back. He arrived about five o'clock on an afternoon of sunshine in mid June, and the old red-brick house, lodged on a southern slope of the Surrey hills, was glowing from a dark forest depth of pines with the warmth of a rare jewel. These are not timeless classics they are not on par with one Harry Potter. The series averages about 150 pages per book. All of them consist of supernatural tales that feature teenage protagonists who go toe-to-toe with ghosts, demons and other magical entities. Each book is a stand-alone story and to the best of my knowledge there are no overlaps or crossovers between books. The series consists of roughly fifteen book written by various authors. ![]() The Dark Forces is a series of teen horror novels that was published by Bantam Books in the early 1980s. In order for me to get my fix of the spookies, I had to turn to – The Dark Forces! Oh no! (Ohhh yes!) What are the Dark Forces? Being that the early 80s were the dawning of my young adult years, Twilight had not yet set in (And from what I’ve heard about the series, that’s a good thing.), While adolescence was a time of strong emotions, I never got the Goosebumps over the whole thing. I didn’t have Harry Potter when I was growing up, only Colonel Potter on M*A*S*H reruns. They had books that featured ghosts, witches, vampires and other cool and creepy things. Growing up, they had all kinds of options when it came to reading young adult stories about the supernatural. ![]() Here’s to the kids of not too long ago yesterday. ![]() ![]() Cross & Crown (Sidewinder) (Kindle Locations 1496-1497). Kelly helps him out and, with Nick’s partner Hagan we get to meet and a surprise visit from Julian Cross of Warrior’ Cross Ms. In Cross & Crown, Kelly comes to visit Nick in Boston for two weeks and arrives just when a crime Nick is investigating gets complicated. We now see how their lives have changed because of it, and how it needs to change more for them to see each other if they’re serious about it, as they live in different states. And how has the movie held up in the decades since it was released? That’s what I’m diving into with this week’s Adapting Stephen King column. The second chapter in the anthology, titled “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill,” is based on the short story “Weeds,” first published in the May 1976 issue of Cavalier magazine and the fourth, “The Crate,” comes from the short with the same title that initially appeared in the July 1979 issue of Gallery. Of those five stories, three of them were invented for the screen, but two of them Stephen King adapted from his own work. Written by the author himself (his first screenplay) and weaving together five diverse horror stories between bookends starring Tom Atkins and a young Joe Hill, Creepshow arrived in theaters in 1982, and became a box office hit. ![]() ![]() Sadly, Romero and King never did actually get to make their adaptation of The Stand, but fans can still be eternally grateful that they did manage to produce a true-blue classic together as their first collaboration. ![]() ![]() Honestly the thing I knew him best for was his marriage to Trotsky’s secretary (and the fact he was almost prosecuted for treason, but that’s neither here nor there). ![]() ![]() Maybe some of you are surprised to see the appearance of Arthur Ransome on this list. I wanted a boat! I wanted English lakes! I wanted long holidays with very little adult supervision! – Anne Nesbet This is the kind of book you don’t outgrow, no matter how old you get. The writing is flawless, and the characters so well-crafted they become practically real people, with fully developed personalities and voices. To kill one (or several) was not to declare one’s independence of nature, or of a God’s provision, and thus mount up on waxen wings, but was instead an effective way to get fresh meat at sea. The albatross was never taken commonly to be a symbol of Christian piety, nor were they “tutelary spirits” of a particular region, as Coleridge’s friend Wordsworth somewhere suggests, and as guides of a voyage they were perfectly useless. As even casual readers in the history of English literature will know, a sailor’s shooting the great sea-bird is the central action in Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s poem Rime of the Ancient Mariner, and as one can probably deduce, that poem is the subject of Malcom Guite’s new book Mariner: A Voyage with Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Hodder and Stoughton, 2017). Let’s get one thing straight: there is nothing wrong with shooting an albatross. ![]() I’m pleased to publish this guest review by Dr. ![]() |
